The amount of acid your stomach produces varies from person to person, but it usually begins with a little bit of acid. Your body makes a small amount of acid-generating enzymes called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These enzymes inhibit the production of acid in your stomach. Once you have inhibited PPI production, the amount of acid produced decreases. Nexium can cause a serious side effect called esomeprazole side effect. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop taking this or any other heartburn medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
